Humans’ interaction with animals is ordinary. It is human nature that they get attracted to animals more often. Keeping animals as pets is now becoming more common. However, the ratio of having cats and dogs as a pet is much higher. According to the survey of 2020/21 33 percent of the people of the United kingdom own at least one dog.

Having a dog is not enough, the real deal is to train them to understand your command. No matter if you have just bought a new puppy or already have an adult. Here are 5 basic commands you need to teach your dog.

Sit

Teaching your dog to get into a sitting position is one of the most basic commands. It will also help you in griping further commands such as come and stay. Follow the steps.

  • Firstly, choose a place with no distractions. Your dog’s attention should be completely on you rather than the environment.
  • Hold a treat at a 45-degree angle from your dog’s nose. This trick will inspire your dog to sit naturally to have a finer look at the treat.
  • Now, say sit, emphasize it, don’t request it.
  • After getting your desired sitting position, give them the treat to appreciate.
  • Repeat the process until your dog master it.

Stay

Teaching your dog to “stay” will help you when you are in public with your pet. This trick is much similar to sitting. Follow the guidelines.

  • Remember, unlike other animals, dogs have a short attention span. Be gentle and maintain patience while teaching them.
  • Command your dog to sit, then open the fist of your hand, in front of your dog and say “stay” in a happy tone.
  • Now take some steps back and reward him, if he stays.
  • Be consistent with the training.

Come

The most important command time when you lose the grip on a leash is “come”. It is not only essential but it will also keep your dog out of trouble. Follow the given guideline.

  • Start with the places your pup is familiar with. From home to garden or from one room to another.
  • Instead of calling them with their names, use “come” more often.
  • Try patting and clapping to motivate your dog.
  • Reward your pup with his/her favorite food every time he follows your instructions.

Leave It

Whether it is a stuffed animal or shoes your dog needs to know when to let go of an object. In order to protect your dog from picking or eating things that might be harmful to them. You must teach them the command “leave it”. To approach this command try using the old bait and switch method. Hold a treat in your both hands (make a fist). Order your pup to drop what is in your right hand, and make use of your left hand for rewarding your pup with a treat after your dog fully withdrew with the treat in your right hand.

Bottom line

62 percent of pet owners have been afraid of a dog’s behavior according to a survey in 2014, in the UK. Training your pets will not only help to ease your understanding of your pet but, will also allow immediate control over your dog in emergency situations. You can have a peaceful visit with your family and friends with a well-trained dog.
